UNESCO Chair

LESBOS was researched and developed under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair of Integration Through Languages and the Arts at the University of Glasgow

LESBOS tells us that Democracy is made in language and through language. It lives and breathes; it contracts and expands.
Exile is not simply spatial but linguistic and psychic, haunted by a spectrality, a delay, by displacement. It is from within this delay and displacement that the writer composes, simultaneously extracted and extracting; being mined by appointment of the host while, concomitantly, mining a FUTURE GRAMMAR from the RUINS.
Led by Professor Alison Phipps, the Chair’s team pioneers a series of research projects, residencies and events which place language and the arts at the heart of refugee integration. Their aim is to work with refugees, artists, NGOs, policy-makers and governments to enhance existing models for refugee integration and address issues around cultural diversity and languages.
